My Canon Pixma 500 will not recognize the cyan ink cartridge! How can I fix this problem?

As there is not much to work with I will try one suggestion if no good if you post more details I will try to help.

If its an Original then there could be problem with the cartridge being faulty so see it the red light on that colour is on. If it is on, then the printer has accepted it has full so it can't be that.

If you have refilled or put in a compatible then it will not recognise it as they are chipped and you will have to re-set the chip or reset printer by pressing the rest button. If you have used refills and compatible there is chip re-setter that can be bought and this re-sets the chip and the ink levels then read full as even if you override the printer manually and it prints it will not reset the ink levels or re-light the cartridge.

Edit

Just seen your edit. If the light has not come on then I would say a good culprit would be a dodgy cartridge. You should return it where you bought if from for a replacement - which if they value customers they should happily do.
